In 2014 we see the National Hockey League hold its 130th season of premier hockey (since 1883), and 96th season of formal league play (since 1917). The season started October 1, 2013 and ran until June 13, 2014. Conventionally, this season is named NHL 2013-2014 since the exhibition and regular season started in 2013 and culminated in the Stanley Cup championship series in 2014.<\/p>\n

Thirty teams competed in an 82 game season, with sixteen of the 30 teams (53%) competing in the playoffs. The Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions faced off against each other for the Stanley Cup Championship.<\/p>\n
