The season started October 27, 2009 and ran until June 17, 2010. Conventionally, this season is named NBA 2009-2010 since the exhibition and regular season started in 2009 and culminated in the NBA Finals championship series in 2010.

Thirty teams competed in an 82 game season, with sixteen of the 30 teams (53%) competing in the playoffs. The Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions faced off against each other for the NBA Finals Championship.
