Major League Baseball, 2015

In 2015 we see Major League Baseball (consisting of the National League and American League) hold its 158th season of premier baseball (since 1857), and 112th season of formalized league play (since 1903). The season started April 5, 2015 and ran until November 1, 2015.

Thirty teams competed in a 168 game season, with ten of the 30 teams (33%) competing in the playoffs. The National League and American League champions faced against each other for the World Series Championship.

National Basketball Association, 2015

In 2015 we see the National Basketball Association hold its 125th season of premier basketball (since 1890), and 66th season of formal league play (since 1949). The season started October 28, 2014 and ran until June 16, 2015. Conventionally, this season is named NBA 2014-2015 since the exhibition and regular season started in 2014  and culminated in the NBA Finals championship series in 2015.

Thirty teams competed in an 82 game season, with sixteen of the 30 teams (53%) competing in the playoffs. The Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions faced off against each other for the NBA Finals Championship.

In 2015 we see the National Hockey League hold its 132nd season of premier hockey (since 1883), and 98th season of formal league play (since 1917). The season started October 4, 2014 and ran until June 15, 2015. Conventionally, this season is named NHL 2014-2015 since the exhibition and regular season started in 2014  and culminated in the Stanley Cup championship series in 2015.

Thirty teams competed in an 82 game season, with sixteen of the 30 teams (53%) competing in the playoffs. The Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions faced off against each other for the Stanley Cup Championship.

2015 saw the National Football League hold its 125th season of premier football (since 1890), and 96th season of formalized league play (since 1922). The season started September 10, 2015 and ran until February 7, 2016. Conventionally, this season is named NFL 2015-2016 since the exhibition and regular season started in 2015 culminating in the championship in 2016.

Thirty-two teams competed in a 16 game season, with twelve of the 32 teams (37.5%) competing in the playoffs. The National Conference and American Conference champions faced against each other for the Super Bowl Championship.

The Major Sports League Season Standings begins

Major Sports Leagues (major-leagues.com) has acquired from various sources the standings and statistics of the Big Four Sports beginning from 1857.

We are tracking the beginnings of the four Big Four Sports and their associated Major Sports Leagues. Below we indicate the the Big Four Sports, its associated initial league, and the years the sport spans:

To begin we will post season standings from 2015 and work backwards, while updating the present when a new season of play has been completed. We will be posting each Major League’s season in order of the championship played within the calendar year. For 2015 and the recent history of standings, we will start each year with the NFL (championship in February), followed by the NHL and NBA (championships in June), and then the MLB (championships in October).
